Distribution of Global MCT Oil Downstream Application Fields

Medium-chain triglycerides are not a single-purpose raw material. The same CAS number (65381-09-1) and the same INCI name (Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride) map onto different specifications, different packaging and different document sets depending on which downstream industry is buying. This article maps the main application segments and — more usefully — the parameters that actually gate each one.

1. Food and nutritional supplements

The largest downstream block, and the widest specification band.

  • Sports nutrition and keto formulations — MCT oil and MCT powder go into protein blends, meal replacements, bulletproof coffee and energy bars. The C8:C10 ratio (60:40 is mainstream) and a low peroxide value decide quality here, because the product is consumed directly and any off-note is immediately obvious.
  • Solid beverages and meal-replacement drinks — spray-dried microencapsulated powder dominates, because the requirement is free flow, easy dispersion and no caking. Total fat (oil load), surface oil and granularity are the parameters that matter.
  • Clinical nutrition and enteral formulas — higher demands on batch consistency and the document trail; usually pharmaceutical grade or premium food grade.
  • Infant and elderly nutrition — MCT supports energy intake where fat absorption is limited, so heavy metals and microbiological limits are the sensitive points.

Ask for: acid value, peroxide value, C8:C10 composition, total fat (powder), surface oil (powder).

2. Pharmaceutical and excipient use

In formulation work MCT functions as a solvent, carrier and softgel fill base — lipid-based drug delivery, oral solutions, injectable fat emulsions.

  • The specification follows a pharmacopoeia monograph (Chinese Pharmacopoeia 2025 Vol. IV, European Pharmacopoeia or USP-NF), not an enterprise standard.
  • Mandatory items include identification (GC retention time against a reference solution), refractive index, viscosity, clarity and colour, unsaponifiable matter, alkaline impurities, residue on ignition, and a fatty-acid window closed on all four sides.
  • The buying behaviour differs too: batch traceability, advance notice of change and frequent audits. The supplier's QA system usually matters more than the price.

Ask for: the full pharmacopoeia test menu, excipient registration status, and the change-control process.

3. Cosmetics and personal care

Caprylic/capric triglyceride is one of the most widely used emollients and solvents in cosmetic formulation — sun care, facial serums, cleansing oils, colour cosmetics and baby care. Its value is a light skin feel, good spreadability, low comedogenicity and strong solvency for fragrance and actives.

  • The specification centres on the INCI name, the skin-safety dossier and heavy-metal limits; food or pharmacopoeia standards do not apply.
  • Colour and odour limits are strict — a yellow cast or an off-note shows up directly in the finished product.
  • It is routinely substituted or blended with IPM, IPP, IPL and 2EHP in the same formula, so purchasing is often negotiated across the ester range rather than one product at a time.

Ask for: colour, odour, acid value, heavy metals, INCI listing and MSDS.

4. Pet nutrition

MCT serves as an energy source in pet food, particularly for dogs and cats needing rapid energy or with limited fat digestion. In powder form for dry-kibble coating, low surface oil is the decisive parameter — it is what keeps the coating from bleeding and the kibble from clumping.

Ask for: surface oil, granularity, total fat, microbiological limits.

5. Feed premixes and specialty industrial use

In feed premixes, aquafeed and some industrial applications MCT acts as an energy carrier; certain esters (2EHP, 2EHL) also appear in lubricants, metalworking fluids and textile auxiliaries. Colour and odour limits are looser here, while batch consistency and cost carry more weight.

7. What this means for buyers

  • One supplier can cover several segments — one specification cannot. Establish your downstream segment first, then request the specification for that grade, rather than applying a generic sheet across applications.
  • The C8:C10 ratio is the most misunderstood item on the sheet. If you need faster ketone conversion or higher purity, specify the caprylic share directly — for example ≥ 95% — instead of writing "MCT".
  • Powder buyers should look beyond the oil specification. Surface oil and granularity decide whether your filling and packing lines run cleanly, and neither appears on an oil COA.
  • Choose the pack size by annual volume. Bulk buys in 190 kg drums to dilute freight cost; small and medium batches use 25 kg drums to reduce capital tied up in stock.

8. What we supply

Our plant in Dongying, Shandong runs at 10,000 tonnes annual capacity and covers every segment above: medium-chain triglycerides (MCT oil), caprylic/capric triglyceride (GTCC / ODO), pharmaceutical-grade MCT, powdered pure C8 MCT, spray-dried MCT powder from 50% to 70% oil load, and the ester range — IPM, IPP, IPL, 2EHP, 2EHL, 2EHS. Bulk ships in 190 kg drums, small and medium batches in 25 kg drums, samples as 1 kg. See the medium-chain triglycerides and MCT 70% microencapsulated powder pages for the full tables, or email [email protected] for the specification and a sample for your segment.

If your segment is not listed, ask — custom C8:C10 ratios and pack sizes are evaluated per requirement. For a quotation, a sample or batch documentation, request a quote on our contact page.
